Have 1 Plumb

As a child, 50 years ago, I remember watching my grandfather use a plumb line to measure (he worked as a carpenter at a steel mill in Birmingham but would spend weekends at home building gorgeous furniture that he mostly gave away to friends and family).  Used since Egyptian times, the plumb line gives the true vertical--there is no arguing with a plumb line.

When a carpenter wants to know how to make a wall straight up and down, he/she always trusts the plumb line to show the true vertical (this was used by the Egyptians all the way to the present time)...

Amos 7:7
...behold the LORD stood on a wall made with a plumb line, with a plumb line in his hand.

Here's the strategy for the day...

Decide on 1 thing--just 1 thing--that will become a plumb line for  you and your health.

What's the thing that you will do that you decided will always be true about how to have excellent health?

Do you agree that you do need a plumb line to be sure the wall is vertical?
Can you see why having a rule or philosophy that becomes the plumb line is part of what keeps the healthy healthy?

People debate about various forms of exercise and diet, so much so that many wind up with nothing they know to be true about how to have excellent health. People who are not healthy change what they think to be true--what the plumb line will be--or they have no plumb line at all.

Possible plumb lines...

Walking 3 miles a day is something that will help and that I will always do.

Spending 1 hour per day at the YMCA always motivates me to exercise and stay healthy and I will go there 5 days a week.

Eating high sugar foods makes me feel badly and gain weight so I just won't eat them ever.

These statements are only suggestions, but the Health Strategy that I'm saying is critical is that you do have at least 1 statement of habit or philosophy that you've found is doable for you and that leads to good health that you've decided will be your plumb line.

Don't build walls without using plumb lines. Don't try to build health without having rules to live by that keep you healthy.

10-Day Experiment

The book of Daniel ends with visions, dreams and stories that inspired and baffled scholars and believers for a few thousand years.

But, how does the book start?

With the prophet deciding what he will eat
and what he will not eat.

1.  Decided to NEVER eat or drink a few things that he thought would not be best for body and spirit.

Is there anything you're willing to NEVER eat or drink because you've found them to be that destructive?

ANYTHING?

No need for a long complicated list…
just decide to not eat or drink those few things.  We're not going for perfect diet…
we're going for perfectly avoiding a few things that you know rip you apart.

and...

2.  Second thing that Daniel decided to do?  To, drink water and eat vegetables!

Fascinating to me that a book that tells of great acts of prophecy and feats of faith…
begins with the decision to drink water and to eat vegetables.

Do you think that when you are thrown into the fiery furnace of your work,
or the lion's den of disaster and diappointment of loss,
that eating vegetables and drinking water could be a beginning point for surviving?

Daniel thought so, too.

Here's the strategy for the day...

Do the same 10-day test that Daniel suggested in Chapter 1.

1.  Completely avoid whatever's on your "never" list.

2.   Do consume the following every day...
a.  5 fruits or vegetables per day.  One serving is 1 cup of vegetables or 1 medium sized piece of fruit
b.  8 glasses of water per day.  I prefer water at room temperature (seems to be easier to drink more of it).

These two keystone habits will automatically change many other habits.
And, of course they fit perfectly with the 1,3,5-Plan for physical, mental, and spiritual health.

Write Your Dreams

Week 47 Day 4
November 23

Write Your Dreams

Daniel 7:1. "...Daniel had a dream & visions of his head while on his bead. Then he wrote them down, telling the main facts."

I remember 50 years go, as a child, listening to preachers talk about Daniel's dreams. Perhaps, his dreams are not the the thing we should most notice.

Maybe the thing to notice is that Daniel paid attention to Daniel's dreams and then he wrote them down. Perhaps, instead of worrying so much about Daniel's dreams a few thousand years ago, we should pay attention to our own dreams!

Then, write them down.

Consider a few people who did pay attention to dreams their own, they may surprise you...

Frank Zane. Dream Writer & Bodybuilder

Frank Zane, who competed at less than 200 pounds, built one of the most symmetrically beautiful physiques ever, & with that physique handed a defeat to Arnold Schwarzenegger in body building.

zane-outfrank-zane
Building such a world-class physique takes a strong mind, not just physical discipline.

In his writings, Mr. Zane repeatedly talks about mind and spirit help develop body.  One of the tools that Mr. Zane used to develop mind, body, & spirit involved paying attention to his dreams and then writing them down in the mornings.

Here's a quote from one of his books, Mind, Body, Spirit: The Personal Training Diaries"...

SYMBOLIC DREAM OF WINNING
About two weeks before the 1977 Mr. Olympia had a dream
down on Venice beach Robbie Robinson throws a long spiral pass
with a football 80 yards then a kid throws a pass even longer
without trying too hard the football hit the hangar where Robbie's model airplane is stored, it explodes.
Looking back now I know that this means
and realize this kid was me.

--Frank Zane

Everyone was watching Robbie Robinson who had an amazing physique, but Zane was training in sweats at the gym (so no one could see his physique) and didn't expect Zane to win--he beat Robinson.  He saw his victory in a dream and recorded it, but didn't really know what it meant until later.

In one of his books, Zane says that the simple habit of writing his dreams helped him see what was bothering him, what inspired him, and sometimes the dreams just make no sense at all. But, still, even when the dreams made no sense, the habit of writing them helped him focus

From the Beatles to Einstein--Dreams that Changed the World

Here's 10 amazing things revealed in dreams...

  1. The Paul McCartney's dream led to the song, Yesterday.
  2. Mary Shelley's dream--the first science fiction novel, Frankenstein.
  3. Niels Bohr dreamed the structure of the atom.
  4. Elias Howe dreamed of savages holding spears pierced and then jumped out of bed at 4 am to design the sewing machine.
  5. Einstein dreamed of going down a hill on a sled; and that dream inspired his theory of relativity.
  6. Srinivasa Ramanujan would dream of a Hindu goddess who write math on a screen of blood (Ramanujan never had any formal training in math but made many breakthroughs in the field). Here's what he wrote after waking from one of his dreams (an infinite series for pi)....Infinite Series for Pi
  7. Robert Louis Stevenson wrote Dr. Jekyll & Mr Hyde in 6 days (and he threw away the first 30,000 word draft) in a frenzy after dreaming the tale. Stevenson was sick much if his life and wrote from his bed while taking breaks to cough up blood (we are not sure if he had tuberculosis or sarcoidosis).
  8. Otto Loewi won a nobel prize for showing how nerves work. He dreamed the experiment to prove his theory, then FAILED TO WRITE DOWN THE DREAM! He then drove himself crazy trying to remember the dream without success. Thankfully, the next night, he had the dream again, and this time got out of the bed and did the experiment and proved how nerves work!
  9. August Kekule dreamed of the Ouroboros and then that dream inspired the his discovery of  the benzene ring (this concept allowed many breakthroughs in organic chemistry including the manufacture of drugs).
  10. Frederick Banting used dreams to develop the use of insulin to treat diabetes.

The Health Strategy...

So, Daniel had a dream and wrote it down. And so did Shelley, and Stevenson, and Einstein.

Did Shelley have the dream because she was Shelley?

Or, did Shelley become Shelley because she asked questions and then wrote what she dreamed?

From muscles to math, maybe dreams can help. Not much to lose and much to gain by just putting a little notebook (I recommend paper and pen because as soon as you turn on phone or computer then you get sucked into other people's dreams)--then when you wake up, just sit up, close your eyes again, remember your dream, then write it (if you wait until you jump out of bed, you'll forget).

Hope this health strategy helps!

Drink 500 ml

Week 47 Day 1
November 19

First, Drink 500ml

Daniel 1:12. "Please test your servants for ten days, and let them give us vegetables to eat and water to drink."

Here's a simple way to start your day that will help your health more effectively than the simplicity of the method might imply:  When you wake in the morning, before you put anything else in your mouth, drink 500 ml of "Smart Water."  If you take morning vitamins/supplements, then take those supplements with the water.

First, if you think it's OK to drink lots of water from the tap, I recommend you read a few of the over 5,000 research papers here that talk about all of the contaminants in water from the tap (click)<--  Everything from arsenic to drugs to caffeine.

Yes, I still drank water from a fountain yesterday at the YMCA. I'm not overly protective about it. But, most of the water that I drink does not come from the tap.

Plenty of people make an art out of what's the best wine. Why not spend 1/2 that much effort thinking about your favorite water?

The most simple way to drink healthy water is to start the day with 500ml of "Smart Water." I like it because it's purified with a charcoal filter, then distillation, then with ozone, and then they add back magnesium and potassium (which helps the taste) ... and it's not out of the park expensive. (Here's the details about how they prepare it).

I will vary my water intake with Pellagrino and Perrier and other waters when out to dinner. I also like filling a glass 1/2 with Perrier and 1/2 with grapefruit juice to take the place of Coke and similar products.

If you have another favorite water or a home water purifier, then go for it!

HUGE TIP--You will drink more water if you drink it at room temperature. Test me on that one.

Also, sometimes when I'm fasting, and sometimes between meals, I'll mix amino acids with the water to save muscle mass and they help curb appetite (one of my favorites.click to see on Amazon). This was an old Vince Gironda trick (who was preaching low-carb eating before anyone knew Dr. Atkins existed & who trained Clint Eastwood for the movies).

Hope these "daily" strategies help. The goal is to get you through the Old Testament once in a year and the New Testament twice, remind you of some basic ideas about virtue, and give practical ways to stay healthy.

No one does this perfectly (and I don't always write these strategies everyday--mostly I write them when I think I need them myself!), but just thinking about health strategies that are practical and doable on a daily basis can still make your life amazingly better.

Believe in Life

Believe in Life

Week 40. Day 2. October 2.

“...believe in Him who raised up Jesus our Lord from the dead.”
-Romans 4:24

Believe in the GOD that gave life back to a body that had become dead. Believe in a Life Force that breathes the life into all living things.

Believe in a land of “milk & honey” where men & women become prophets to themselves by consuming physical food that does not take life--and by living a life that does the same--where men & women worship the LIFE in all and recognize the stupidity of thinking that the GOD of LIFE would command we take away life in the name of LIFE but only to protect life.

Believe in the idea that life never ends when the Force of life is there to move life from one place to another.

Believe that the same Force may show ways to bring more expression of LIFE to a life.

Believe that life is not something that people make but something that people accept as a gift...and then protect and care for as the most precious of gifts.

Believe that faith opens up the expression of Life
And that work combined with faith brings good results
While work without faith is dead
And faith without work is life without form and so is useless.

Those are some of the ideas in Romans 3-4.

Health Strategy

Believe in the Force of GOD that brings all life—creating new life in the newborn child, animation to work, and renewal to the body for the most excel- lent health, inspiration to despair, and even rebirth even to the body that was dead. Know that GOD is Love and it is LOVE that is Life while hate is death & despair. Work is Love made concrete or it is nothing. Work, create, Love, believe...work at health, at creating what you're meant to do on this planet.

Virtue:  Temperance. Eat not to dullness. Drink not to elevation.

Hear Words Mixed with Pain

Last week I saw a movie and noticed something:
when I watch a movie to see at the end "based on a true story,"
then my spirit rises.

When I say that a person inspires me, what I really mean is that that
person's story inspires me.

Stories of people fighting through hours of danger, or pain, or illness, or loneliness to breathe one word of encouragement to one other person--those stories wake me.

The story of Paul in today's reading includes lines that have helped me and others I have known find good things--including health:

Prostrate and "trembling," Paul said, "LORD, what wilt thou have me to do?"

In that line hides the secret…told by Boethius, Frankle, Paul, Buddha, Christ, every real prophet of every time and culture...

When in the most pain, in the most terror, in the most humble state,
the people who inspired me most, instead of crumbling into quiting, crumbled into listening.

The pain brought them to a place of hearing…to a place of oneness
perhaps impossible any other way.

Then, after hearing the answer to "Lord, what wilt thou have me to do?" they got up and even when in the city of pleasure, remembered the answer whispered to them in the shadow of helplessness.

Remembering the voice heard during pain when the pain leaves…
that's the trick--that's the secret.

The prophets wrote--not just so that we could read but so that each could remember his own answer when the cloud of pleasure would muffle the soul's whisper.

Here's an health exercise: remember your greatest pain, be still and really remember (you may not need to remember, it may surround you now).

After you connect to the pain, you can hear; so, then ask the eternal question, "What would YOU have me to do?."

Write what you hear and look at it because,
Now you have the map and your walk in the sun and in the shadow
will lead us all to a better place...
and you will find your best health.
